Why Magnetic Island?

Minimize
There are many compelling reasons why Ergon Energy chose Magnetic Island as the site for the leading-edge Solar Suburb initiative.

With its stunning natural surroundings, it’s no surprise that many Magnetic Islanders are supportive of initiatives that seek to protect our environment.

Reducing peak demand

In many parts of Queensland, including Magnetic Island, Ergon Energy is responding to the challenge of an increasing demand for electricity.

On Magnetic Island, electricity demand peaks during the evening – usually between 6pm and 9pm – as people prepare meals, watch TV, use air conditioners, computers and other appliances. We refer to this as "peak demand".

This peak increases significantly during holiday periods such as Easter and Christmas, as the weather is at its hottest and the population swells with holiday-makers.

Ergon Energy must have sufficient capacity built into cables and connections to cover this maximum peak 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This requires a significant investment in network capacity that is only fully utilised on a few days each year.

Magnetic Island is growing, and rather than build more infrastructure to meet rising demand, it makes financial and environmental sense to show Magnetic Islanders how to use less electricity or shift electricity to non-peak times.
